Community Mobilization – The Chandler Coalition on Youth Substance Abuse

The Chandler Coalition on Youth Substance Abuse (CCYSA), founded by ICAN in 2005, is made up of Chandler youth, parents and city officials who work to educate the community about the dangers of substance abuse. Shoulder tappings, signage counting, and party patrol are all part of the CCYSA’s mission to reduce substance abuse among Chandler youth.

ICAN recognizes that for youth to realize their potential as responsible, self confident and productive citizens, community conditions that promote the safety and well-being of all must exist. As a result, ICAN addresses the risks that exist in the Chandler Redevelopment Area where our youth live through strategic prevention practices identified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. By training and mobilizing youth, parents, and stakeholders of our community in effective advocacy and mobilization strategies, community norms that favor youth health and well being are promoted and policy is driven to create conditions for youth success.

The Chandler Coalition on Youth Substance Abuse (CCYSA) also works diligently to provide training resources for our community. Coalition members have created training opportunities with local schools, first responders, police officers, and the fire department. Teens and parents involved with ICAN and the Mayor’s Youth Commission carry out the essential social marketing and training activities that mobilize the community to take action against substance abuse.
